NET EXAM RELATED DETAILS

The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The Test is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science.

 


The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the UGC-CSIR NET for other Science subjects, namely, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences jointly with the UGC. For candidates who desire to pursue research, the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is available for five years subject to fulfillment of certain conditions.

Eligibility - 

  • At least 55% marks in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination for General and OBC candidates.
  • At least 50% marks for SC/ST candidates, Physically and Visually Handicapped candidates and Ph.D. degree holders who had passed Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991.
  • Master’s degree (final year) passed or appearing

 


NET JUNE 2011 - NEW test pattern
It has been decided to introduce Single Paper MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) based test from June 2011 NET exam. The pattern for the Single Paper MCQ test shall be as given below:-

  • The MCQ Test Paper of each subject shall carry a maximum of 200 marks.
  • The test shall be for duration of 3 hours.
  • The question paper shall be divided in three parts.


PART A -  Part A shall be common to all the candidates appearing for NET.

  • 20 objective questions on General Science and Research Aptitude
  • Out of 20 questions, only 15 questions need to be answered
  • All questions shall be of 2 marks each. The total marks allocated to this section will be 30 out of 200


1) PHYSICAL SCIENCES


PART - B

  • This part shall contain 20 MCQs generally covering the topics given in the 'Part A' (CORE ) of the syllabus
  • ALL questions are COMPULSORY
  • Each question shall be of 3.5 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 70 out of 200.
  • There will be negative marking @25% for each wrong answer



PART - C

  • This part shall contain 25 questions from 'Part B' (Advanced) that are designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific applications and/or application of the scientific concepts.
  • There will be 10 COMPULSORY questions.
  • Out of the remaining 15 questions, a maximum of 10 questions need to be answered.
  • Each question shall be of 5 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 100 out of 200.
  • There will be negative marking @25% for each wrong answer

 

2) MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

 

PART - B

  • This part shall contain 40 MCQs generally covering the topics given in the syllabus
  • A candidate shall be required to answer any 25 questions
  • Each question shall be of 3 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 75 out of 200
  • There will be negative marking @25% for each wrong answer


PART - C

  • This part shall contain 60 questions that are designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific applications and/or application of the scientific concepts.
  • The questions in this part will have multiple correct options. Credit in a given question shall be given only on identification of ALL correct options. No credit shall be alloweds in a question if any incorrect option is marked as correct answer.
  • A candidate shall be required to answer any 20 questions
  • Each question shall be of 4.75 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 95 out of 200
  • There will be NO NEGATIVE MARKING in 'Part C'

 

 

3) CHEMICAL SCIENCES

 

PART - B

  • This part shall contain 50 MCQs generally covering the topics given in the syllabus
  • A candidate shall be required to answer any 35 questions
  • Each question shall be of 2 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 70 out of 200
  • There will be negative marking @25% for each wrong answer


PART - C

  • This part shall contain 75 questions that are designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific applications and/or application of the scientific concepts.
  • A candidate shall be required to answer any 25 questions
  • Each question shall be of 4 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 100 out of 200
  • There will be negative marking @25% for each wrong answer

 


4) LIFE SCIENCES

PART - B

  • This part shall contain 50 MCQs generally covering the topics given in the syllabus
  • A candidate shall be required to answer any 35 questions
  • Each question shall be of 2 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 70 out of 200
  • There will be negative marking @25% for each wrong answer

 

PART - C

  • This part shall contain 75 questions that are designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific applications and/or application of the scientific concepts.
  • A candidate shall be required to answer any 25 questions
  • Each question shall be of 4 marks. The total marks allocated to this section will be 100 out of 200
  • There will be negative marking @25% for each wrong answer
