Eligibility
Ph.D. programme in Physics
- M.Sc. in Physics or M.Sc. / M.E. / M.Tech. in related disciplines.
- Candidates with M.Sc. in Mathematics and B.Tech (in Engg Physics/Applied Physics/Post B.Sc. Hons only) will also be considered at IIA.
- Graduates with a B.E. or B.Tech. will also be considered at IISc, IMSc, IUCAA, JNCASR, NCRA, RRI, IISER Mohali, IISER Pune and SNBNCBS.
- At IPR candidates should have a Masters degree in Physics, Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, etc. with at least 55% aggregate.
- Talented final year B. Sc. Graduates will also be considered for pre-selection at IUCAA.
Integrated M.Sc. - Ph.D. Programme
- At HRI, candidates with a Bachelor's degree will also be considered for the integrated M.Sc. - Ph.D. programme in Physics.
- At IMSc, graduates with B.Sc. / B.E. / B. Tech. degree will also be considered for admission to M.Sc. (by Research) programme in Physics and Theoretical Computer Science, as part of an integrated Ph.D. programme.
- At SNBNCBS, graduates with B.Sc. (Physics) / B.E. / B.Tech. degree will be considered for the integrated Post-B.Sc.-Ph.D. programme in subject areas mentioned above.
- At IIA, graduates with B.Sc. (Physics/Mathematics) / B.E. / B.Tech. degree will be considered for the integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme in subject areas mentioned above.
JEST Examination Pattern
1) PHYSICS
- Basic knowledge in courses such as Mathematical Physics, Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and some special subjects such as Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics, Nuclear Physics etc.
- Multiple-choice questions only with two levels of difficulty.
- The first level will have 25 "easier" questions carrying 1 mark each. The second level will have 25 "difficult" questions carrying 3 marks each.
- Total test questions will be 50 questions adding to total maximum marks of 100.
- 40% questions will be from B.Sc. level and 60% questions will be from M.Sc. level.

TATA INSTITUTE OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH (TIFR)

1) Physics –
Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, Department of High Energy Physics, Department of Nuclear and Atomic Physics, Department of Theoretical Physics (all at Mumbai campus) (Ph.D. programme)
2) Chemistry – Department of Chemical Sciences, Mumbai
Eligibility (for both Physics & Chemistry) –
- M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.Tech. degree holders.
- Fresh B.Sc. graduates with consistently good academic record and knowledge of advanced topics may also apply.
3) Biology
Eligibility –
- M.Sc. in any basic science discipline, M.Sc. (Ag), B.Tech., B.E.,MBBS, B.V.Sc., BDS, B.Pharm. & M.Pharm.
Test Pattern
The test will be extremely basic and cover topics in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.
There is no specified syllabus, nor do we give out sample question papers for Biology. In addition, candidates will be asked to write an essay of a maximum of 1500 words. The topic related to biology or general science will be provided on the exam form. Up to three choices will be provided for the essay topic.
Those who qualify on this test will be sent forms for the next phase of the selection procedure. Performance in the written test, together with the information requested in the additional application material will be used in drawing up a short list of candidates for interviews.
The interview will be held in two stages. A good performance in the preliminary interview will qualify the candidate for the final interview to be held over the next two days. The NCBS and DBS admissions process for PhD programmes are common up to Entrance Test. Separate interviews will be held at Bangalore and Mumbai. Selection of students for the NCBS PhD and IntPhd programmes will be held in May/June 2011. Interviews for DBS will be in April 2011.
Admission Procedure
The admissions procedure consists of a written test at one of several nationwide centres. The written test will held in held December 2010.

Integrated Ph.D. programme
The Institute offers exciting opportunities to motivated and talented Bachelor’s degree holders with a keen sense of scientific enquiry for pursuing advanced research in frontier areas of Biological, Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences leading to the Ph D degree of the Institute. Experience shows that students entering this program save nearly on an average of one year compared to those who go for a 2 years Master's degree programs elsewhere and then join the Institute for Ph D program.
Eligibility
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology/ Chemistry/Physics/Mathematics under 10+2+3 system.
- Minimum requirement for admission to Integrated Ph D program is a FIRST CLASS or equivalent Grade in Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.
IISc Entrance Test 2012
All the candidates who apply to Integrated Ph D program should qualify in IISc Entrance Test 2012. The short-listing of candidates for interview is done based on the performance in the IISc Entrance Test. Interviews are held during June. IISc Entrance Test is conducted in Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences.
